About the trainer:

This year Dave is celebrating his 34th year of training dogs. He started training dogs in 1973 while in high school. At this point in his career he was active in obedience training and hunting dogs. After graduating college in 1977, he was hired by Syracuse University to work in their canine police unit to train their dogs and to patrol the Syracuse University campus.

Until 1995, Dave worked with many Upstate New York police departments in developing and training their canine units, as well as many private businesses and individuals in personal protection dogs.

During Dave's career, he has trained dogs for tracking, narcotic detection, explosive detection, personal protection, police canine units, search and rescue and his primary focus, obedience training.

Dave has trained dogs from all over New York State and as far away as Florida, Colorado, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire and Canada. Most of his clients are from New York State and are household pets.

Although obedience training is and always will be Dave's great love, he has also trained dogs that have done very well in the show ring.

What your dog will learn:

Our program has been very successful over the years and literally hundreds of dogs have gone through this school.

Your dog will learn all of the basic obedience commands including to heel properly and walk on a leash so that he does not pull, to sit, stay and lay down. Your dog will become "bi-lingual" with both verbal and hand signals for all commands.

In addition to all the basic commands, all issues that you may have will be addressed in your dogs training. Many dogs have common problems such as jumping and nipping at hands. However, your pet may have a unique issue. With Mr. Petrie's experience, he can resolve just about any problem.

Most importantly, your dog will experience real life! Mr. Petrie takes your dog into the community to be involved in "real life" situations. He takes them to village parks to see other people walking their dogs. He teaches them to walk in and out of doorways, walk up and down stairs and to sit when you come to an intersection in the road. He exposes them to kids on bikes and all other every day experiences.

Why is this important? These activities are what you see and do in life. It gives your dogs the socialization and confidence that makes them a well behaved dog. Although, basic obedience commands can be taught in a classroom, it rarely exposes a dog to real life events.
We take your dog and house them at our facility for 7 days. Our facility is located on State Route 13 in the town of Camden, New York, located 6 miles north of the village.

Five of the 7 days, your dog's training will take place in the village of Camden which is an ideal community for your dog's training needs. It is a very busy community with all the training stimuli that we take advantage of.

Dave often calls his school the "school of hard knocks". It is truly reality training. There is no better place to teach your dog good social skills and how to handle being out in society than to get him out there! He will be exposed to the distractions you may very well encounter in your life.

Many people have asked why we do co not do the 6-8 week class room training that many trainers do. What we have found over the years is that a percentage of the dogs we receive every season, are retrains from the class room training.

When you go to the classroom type training, you will go to a designated training arena once a week for 1 or 2 hours for 6-8 weeks. This is a very sterile atmosphere. The trainer will teach YOU how to train your dog on a specific command and then YOU are expected to work on the command until the next week. There in lies the problem. A classroom setting cannot simulate a squirrel running up a tree, a kid on a skateboard or bike, a tractor trailer hitting the air brakes, a siren on an emergency vehicle, etc. By the time you get to the next week's session, the trainer is ready to move onto the next command. We have concluded that this training just does not hold.

We train 2-3 dogs per week from April to November. These dogs are here for seven days of intense training with individual attention given to them by a professional trainer. At the end of the week, you and anyone else who will be handling the dog comes to our facility for the dog's graduation lesson. We meet and your dog will be very happy to see you again. We will be the bad guys that day to calm him down.

Your private lesson will take place in the village for a simulation of what your dog has learned through the week. This lesson will give you a very good idea of what you should do to reinforce your dog's training. The lesson takes about 1-2 hours depending on how many people you wish to attend. You will be handling the dog like a pro in no time.

Our customers are truly amazed at how well their dog behaves in a weeks time.
